Debbie's Boutique-Style Tissue Box Cover

This is a very quick and easy project, requiring only minimal skill and supplies. The best kind, eh?? :-)

Materials
1 Boutique-style tissue box
Fabric for main body of cover, 13"x16", or one fat quarter
Fabric for opening facing, approx. 2 1/2" x 3 3/4"
Scrap of interfacing for facing above, approx. 2 1/2" x 3 3/4"
Fabric for ruffle trim, if desired, approx. 3" x 45-50"
Sewing thread to match and/or contrast
Scissors/rotary cutter, pins, ruler/tape measure
Sewing machine and serger (or zig-zag stitch on sewing machine)
Iron for pressing seams

Optional:
Pinking shears
Rectangles of clear vinyl, if photo pockets desired, cut approx. 1/2" bigger than photos
Embroidery designs, thread, and stabilizer, if desired
Lace instead of ruffle, approximately 22" if not gathered.

I used a Kleenex brand box. It measures 4-3/8" wide by 5-1/8" tall. If your box is a different brand or a flat rectangular tissue box, please measure it. Add 3/4" to both the actual width and height for the 5 main pattern pieces. The 3/4" includes 1/4" seam allowances (x 2) and 1/4" "wearing ease."

Seam allowances are 1/4", unless noted differently.

Below is the Key for the fabric and instructions:

RS = Right Sides
WS = Wrong Sides

1a. If you are adding embroidery designs to the panels, do this before cutting cover rectangles so that you can adjust embroidery placement if necessary.

1. From the cover fabric, cut four rectangles 5" x 5-3/4" and one 5" square.

1b. If you are adding clear vinyl photo pockets, attach after cutting cover rectangles. Using thread to match cover, sew vinyl pocket onto cover panel 1/16" in from vinyl edge on two sides and across bottom of pocket. A teflon foot is helpful. You will not be able to pin the vinyl into place as pins will leave permanent holes, so hold the vinyl carefully and stitch S-L-O-W-L-Y.

2. From Ruffle fabric, cut facing piece 3-1/2" x 4-1/4" and one strip 3" x 50". The ruffle should be approximately 2-1/2 times the perimeter of the box. This can be cut on the fold of 45" fabric if you do not have a 50" strip.

3. Cut one piece of fusible interfacing to match facing piece, 3-1/2" x 4-1/4".

4. Cut clear vinyl for pocket(s), if desired, approximately 1/2" larger than photo(s). If your photo is 3"x2", cut the vinyl 3-1/2" x 2-1/2".

5. Overlock all four sides of each of the five cover pieces. A narrow-3 thread stitch is perfect and the threads do not have to match the project!!

5. Fuse interfacing to wrong side of facing fabric, per package instructions. Pink or overlock raw edges, if desired.

7. Place facing and cover top square RS together and pin, if desired. With a short straight stitch, sew a rectangle approx. 1-1/2" wide by 3" long. See Red stitching line below.

8. Cut a straight line down the center of the sewn rectangle, leaving 1/4" at each end. Clip to corners as shown in Red below.

9. Turn facing to the inside and press. On the outside, edgestitch close to the seamed edges. See stitching in Red below.

(I like to leave a bit of the facing showing so it looks like piping.)

10. With RS together and a straight stitch, sew one narrow side of each cover rectangle to each side of the cover square piece. Start and end your seams 1/4" in from the corner. See red stitching line below. Press seams flat along stitched area.

At this point, your cover should look like the image below.

11. Align adjacent side pieces at raw edges and stitch together, stopping 1/4" from the top. See Red stitching line below. Your previous seams and this new seam will join together in a "Y" seam. Backstitch or lockstitch. Press seams flat. Turn RS out.

12. Press ruffle strip in half lengthwise, WS together. Open fold and stitch short ends together RS facing. Press seam flat. Refold WS together and press seam flat again

13. Using a ruffler foot, your serger, or traditional gathering threads, sew or baste along long side raw edges to create a ruffle. Do not cross starting and ending stitches so you can adjust ruffle as necessary.

14. Using straight pins as markers, divide the ruffle into fourths. Match one pin/marker to each corner of the cover with RS together, raw edges matching. See below.

15. Sew/serge ruffle to cover, using a 1/2" (one-half) seam allowance.

Note: These instructions allow for the ruffle to "sit" on the table surface a bit. If you prefer the ruffle to just skim the surface, adjust the cover piece length accordingly.

16. Turn ruffle down and press seam allowance up toward cover. Topstitch or edgestitch in place.

Voila!
